Marine monitoring is a variant of OPSIS general offers for continuous emissions monitoring (CEM) and process control. The special operating conditions on-board vessels call for special measures to comply with regulations and expectations. However, OPSIS has mastered this environment and has for many years successfully delivered systems for marine applications.
The application of OPSIS’ marine system offers can be divided in two parts: emissions monitoring and process control.
The OPSIS system M800 has become a success story for both OPSIS and its users, as applied to monitoring of sulfur dioxide, carbon dioxide and/or nitric oxides emissions from marine engines.
The marine MARPOL conventions call for reduction of sulfur emissions from marine engines. An often preferred method to manage this is to install sulfur scrubbers in the exhaust system, but the scrubber efficiency then has to be proved by continuous monitoring of the emissions. This is effectively made by calculating the ratio between SO2 and CO2 concentration in the exhaust gas.
Emissions monitoring can be a challenge since the exhaust gas usually is both wet and corrosive. However, OPSIS’ system M800 handles this superbly thanks to its in-situ monitoring method. Further, a single gas analyser is enough to measure the concentration of both gases, and even better, a single gas analyser is enough to monitor the gas concentrations in multiple gas ducts, in parallel. This results in a very cost efficient system solution, appreciated by the many vessel owners that already utilize the OPSIS system M800.
The OPSIS system M800 can also be extended to measure nitric oxides emissions under the MARPOL conventions, still using a single gas analyser and still in multiple gas ducts if required. It can also be adapted as a NOx emissions only monitor, if the sulfur emissions need not to be measured.
Within the field of process control, it is in particular OPSIS oxygen monitor that has found its way to marine applications. It is for example successfully applied to monitor and control inert gas generators.
Thanks to the design of the OPSIS products, the systems for marine monitoring is very reliable and requires only a minimum of maintenance, resulting in very low operational costs.
The OPSIS systems for marine monitoring have been tested and approved by a number of internationally recognized institutes and authorities related to the marine industry, such as Bureau Veritas, DNV, RINA, and Lloyd's Register.
